SACRAMENTO, Calif. — At just 20 years old, the third-year student, Nikita Akhumov serves as the Executive Director of the College Democrats at Sac State and has founded multiple student-led initiatives. While his accomplishments are impressive, what sets Akhumov apart is his humility, his knack for strategy, and his unwavering commitment to empowering others.

Akhumov’s influence on the College Democrats has been transformative. Christian Hernandez-Hunter, the organization’s president, describes him as “the backbone of our success.” Under Akhumov’s leadership, the College Democrats have grown into one of the largest and most active student groups on campus, known for its grassroots organizing and political engagement.

“Nikita doesn’t seek the spotlight—he just gets things done,” Hernandez-Hunter said. “He’s the kind of leader who makes everyone around him better. We’re lucky to have him.”

As Executive Director, Akhumov has been instrumental in shaping the College Democrats’ strategic direction. Akhumov has maintained an impressive academic record, excelling in his coursework while balancing his leadership roles. His ability to juggle multiple responsibilities with grace and precision has earned him the admiration of peers and professors alike.

Josiah Ben-Oni, President of the Sunrise Movement at Sac State, a youth-led anti-discrimination advocacy group, praised Akhumov’s ability to think ahead. “Nikita is always a step ahead,” Ben-Oni said. “He has this unique ability to anticipate challenges and find solutions before they even become problems. It’s like he’s playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.”

Looking ahead, Akhumov plans to continue his work with the College Democrats and expand his efforts to empower students. His goal is simple: to create a campus environment where everyone feels capable of making a difference.

“Nikita is a builder,” said a fellow student involved in one of Akhumov’s organizations. “He doesn’t just talk about change—he creates the spaces and structures that make it possible. His vision is contagious, and it’s inspiring to see how much he’s accomplished at such a young age.”

As a Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader at Sac State, he has developed a knack for teaching and mentorship, skills he seamlessly integrates into his work with the College Democrats. “Being an SI Leader has taught me how to break down complex ideas and make them accessible,” Akhumov explained. “I apply that same approach to my work with the College Democrats—helping others understand their roles and empowering them to take initiative.”

In an era where young leaders are increasingly stepping into the spotlight, Nikita Akhumov stands out as a visionary strategist and a true agent for change. At just 20 years old, he has already left an indelible mark on Sac State.
